Alentejo cowbell / Chocalho alentejano

The cowbell of Alentejo is a traditional percussion instrument with an unmistakable sound and a fundamental role in the sound landscape of rural areas, especially where grazing is still practised. Their ancestral way of making is handed down from parents to children and requires a demanding manufacturing process before the parts are polished and perfected. For being such an ancient craft that is at the risk of disappearing, it has been classified as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Ours are still made in Reguengos de Monsaraz, by Mr. Joaquim.

O chocalho alentejano é um instrumento de percussão tradicional, com um som inconfundível e um papel fundamental na paisagem sonora das áreas rurais, sobretudo onde ainda se pratica o pastoreio. O seu método ancestral de produção é transmitido de pais para filhos e requer um exigente processo de fabrico manual, antes das peças serem polidas e aperfeiçoadas. Por ser um processo artesanal tão antigo que corre o risco de desaparecer, foi classificado Património Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade pela UNESCO. Os nossos são ainda feitos em Reguengos de Monsaraz, pelo mestre Joaquim.
